Ideas for Creating Junk Journals

19 Aug

We are into our third week of exploring ideas for creating junk journals! We hope you have been inspired so far and sharing your own makes in the Facebook Fan Club. Junk journals can take so many forms and be used for pretty much any purpose. A junk journal is what you want it to be! You may think you can’t create a junk journal but I bet you’ll surprise yourself. Read on to see this week’s projects from the Inspiration Team.

Scroll for inspiration…

Elizabeth Robinson made a beautiful mixed media cover for her Notebook Die journal. Those colors and layers are wonderful! The inside pages are mix of plain and patterned papers. Check out Elizabeth’s blog post for all the details on how she made this.

Team member Jenny Marples truly did use “junk” to create the structure of her new art journal and it is truly amazing! The cover is cut using the Pocket Notebook Die and the inside is full of flaps, pages, and parts that stick out. You will not regret going through the tutorial on her blog. I can’t wait to see how she adds the art to this super cool “blank canvas”.

Do you have a hoard of scrap paper leftover from various projects? (Bet you do!) Anna-Karin Evaldsson busted out her stash and stuffed a Notebook Die cover full of color swatch tests, stamping, tags and other mixed media goodies. Her junk journal is bursting with colorful fun and what a great feeling to be using up scraps that might be considered “junk”. See it all in her tutorial on her blog.

Cleverly using the Gift Box with Scalloped Edges Die, Tonya Trantham created a “Everyday Life” junk journal. In signature Tonya style, she filled it with die cuts, embellishments, stickers and all sorts of other goodies to make a darling shabby chic style journal. Check out all the steps and detail photos on her blog.

Of course, it’s up to you how big you want to make the insert books that go inside the journals, but here’s a guide to help you get started.

The Pocket Notebook and Passport Book dies contain elements on the dies to create pages that fit in the book, but don’t worry… small books can be found in discount and stationery stores that are pre-made and inexpensive if you don’t want to make your own. Inserts are really easy to do though!

Next week we will see junk journal ideas from the Educator Team!

Thanks for stopping by to pay a visit! All month long we will be featuring journal creations from the Teams. You certainly will be inspired with ideas to adapt to your own works of art. If you missed the first two posts, you can find them here and here.

Junk Journal Ideas Galore!

13 Aug

Did you miss the August kick off post last week? The theme this month is Junk Journals with a focus on the “insides”. The Inspiration and Educator Teams have been busy! Comfort zones are being stretched but everyone is rising to the occasion! Scroll on to see junk journal ideas galore…

First up to bat (see what I did there, lol) is Maggi Harding with a fabulous vintage Halloween vibe junk journal. She used the Pocket Notebook Die for the cover and filled it with so many fold outs, tuck spots and tags it will blow your mind! She also has a tutorial for how to make a waterfall element. You will not want to miss her post with all the details.

Susie Bentz claims that she isn’t a junk journaler but she came up with an awesome idea utilizing the Tiny Book Die. She made a holder for embellishment tickets you can use in your junk journal projects. Head on over to her blog to see her ingenious idea and how she did it.

It’s a work in progress… fangirl Lisa Hoel is creating an epic Wonder Woman themed junk journal. (I have it on good authority that she has a whole folder full of ephemera saved up to use.) A whole lotta junk requires the use of Eileen’s largest journal die – the Journal XL. Lisa used that for the cover and she will be able to pack it full! Check out her blog post to see the cover and two inner page ideas. Part 2 will be next week!

Mitsyana Wright is another one of the designers who says she is no good at filling up junk journals. Well, she sure proved herself wrong this time! Using the Passport Book Die, she created a delightful unicorn journal as a birthday gift for her daughter. It is bright and cheerful and her daughter will love it (and it has stuff inside 😉 ) See all the details in her blog post. And as Mitsyana says, a junk journal can be whatever you want it to be.

Meet the Eileen Hull Educators Team!

24 Jun

You know about Eileen’s Inspiration Team – each week they bring you exciting projects for your viewing pleasure here on the blog. There is also another team behind the scenes and it’s time for them to step into the limelight. Meet the Eileen Hull Educators Team! These talented ladies promote Eileen’s products during the course of their creative careers through teaching classes, making youtube videos, writing blog tutorials and sharing all around our world-wide creative space. Going forward, they are going to be featured here on the blog the fourth week of each month. That means even more inspiration for you guys!

So who are these folks? Scroll on…

Madeline Arendt
“From early on being a “maker” has been what I like to do. I have worked in various ways within the creative craft industry for a number of years. Everyday life brings changes, but that desire and love of making and creating has never left. Staying connected to “creative souls” that I’ve been lucky enough to know for a long time, brings me to this moment and this group, wanting to share that with others.”

Meet the Eileen Hull Educators Team!
Favorite Project: Journal

Jennie Atkinson
I live on the remote Scottish Island, Shetland, the very north of the UK and closer to the surrounding Scandinavian countries than Mainland Scotland. Consequently I have learnt my current crafting passions through online videos and trial and error! My style is shabby vintage mixed media and I am passionate about making my own flower embellishments, with a love of books coming a close second.  I have been creating in some form or another all my life and whilst I love the messy nature of mixed media, evenings will find me either spinning Shetland fleece or knitting the local Fair Isle and Lace patterns. I love sharing my work either in tutorials on my blog, local workshops and on Design Teams and am excited to now being able to share my love of Eileen’s dies with you all.

Meet the Eileen Hull Educators Team!
Favorite Project: Vintage Tea Dyed Wrap Journal

Debbie Bankston
I am a lifelong crafter, artist, demonstrator, instructor and designer. In my paper crafting world I enjoy creating with die cuts and sharing tutorials on YouTube. As an artist I combine painting and paper projects often. I create projects daily in my small studio in south Georgia.

Favorite Project: Lap Book Project

Go ahead, get a beverage refill. We’ll wait.

Cheryl Bodkin-Waters
Greetings from Orange County, California. I’ve been a maker for most of my life. I enjoy teaching and make it a goal to share a message of inspiration and encouragement along the way. I am a self-taught mixed media artist, paper crafter, jewelry artist, author, speaker, and enjoy lots of different mediums. My style is shabby chic, grunge, vintage type and I enjoy connecting with creatively minded people like you. I have had the wonderful opportunity of sharing art and cultivating friendships while being a former Fiskars lead ambassador, sharing as a guest designer for several manufacturers, regularly writing and sharing work with Stampington’s many publications, teaching on-line classes and more. I look forward to connecting with you and learning and creating together with wonderful and innovative Sizzix and Eileen Hull’s dies and products.

Favorite Project: Be Inspired Pocket Notebook

Cheryl Boglioli
I am a mixed-media artist on the leading edge of new products and techniques within the various disciplines of the ever-growing market. As a full-time Artist with a passion for teaching, you can find me Living the Art Life TM , traveling and teaching workshops at independent stores and events worldwide. Eileen’s dies combined with her scoreboards are the perfect surface to play with paints and mediums. My favorite at the moment is still the quite versatile Journal .

Favorite Projects: Painted Travel Journals

Keep going, there is more to see!

Kathy Clement
I have a passion for all things paper! I made my first greeting card when I was about 4 years old using my Crayolas and a Doodle Pad. After raising and homeschooling our family of 5, I rediscovered my love for paper, color, pattern and design and started Kathy by Design in  2008. My style is vintage/shabby chic with lots of layers, details, flowers and ribbon. I dabble in mixed media and altered art, but am primarily known for my cards and folios. I love using die cuts in my projects because they add depth, dimension and texture to the finished product. Eileen’s teacup is probably my all time favorite die. My studio is my happy place, and I get totally lost in the creative process. I started my blog in 2013 because my heart was to educate and inspire others to discover the joy of paper crafting.

Favorite Project: Alice Treasure Box

Wendy Cuskey
Having been a paralegal for over 20 years, I am well familiar with the daily grind of the 9-5 world, etching out pockets of time here and there to hone my craft (usually after kids were in bed until wee hours of the morning). During my employment with Sizzix, I was able to share my eclectic style using many mediums as well as teach project classes to consumers and retailers alike. My real passion is to create projects and teach classes which I hope to start doing again on a regular basis; even if only in my basement! I am excited for the opportunity to share my love of art with and through Eileen; she is a talented, lovely lady and a dear friend.

Favorite Project: Trinket Box made for the Die packaging

Could you pick just one favorite project? 😉

Sarah Lizzie Dodd
I am a full time artist based just outside Chester in the UK. I work with a variety of different materials and mediums! Art and crafting is a great way to express how you are feeing and it’s a great mindfulness activity. I run workshops, online tuition and various other events from my home based studio. One of my favorite dies at the moment is the Display Stand Die and the Tiny Book Die.

Favorite Project: Be Your Own Beautiful Tiny Book

Sue Eldred
I am a DIY, paper crafting, picture taking, creative kind of gal. (Also kind of an organizing nut.) Finding good junk to re-purpose into great treasures is one of my loves and I have an eclectic style. I like clean and simple, shabby, vintage and at times I like to get completely messy. I get a great deal of satisfaction of creating for myself and others.

Favorite Project: Christmas Ornament House

There are so many fabulous designers on the team!

Annette Green
I am a former graphic designer since college and after having our daughter, I turned into a crafting maniac! Scrapbooking, quilting, sewing, card making, stamping, cross-stitching, you name it! For the past 15 years I’ve been a designer and traveling instructor in the paper crafting industry, representing some of the top companies in the biz. I work in my Greenville, SC studio (where we just moved!) every single day making goodies to share online, through classes and events, and also to sell in my Etsy shop. I also love to cook read, exercise and be outdoors as much as possible.

Favorite Project: Rotating Jewelry Box

Anita Houston
I love everything about Art and have tried it all, but mostly dabble in Mixed Media, Paper Crafting, General Crafting, Encaustics, and Painting, and I currently have a line of stamps. I’m on the road a lot, teaching and demoing in the U.S., but mostly in Texas as that’s where I’m from. I truly love what I do, and get such a sense of fulfillment when participants in my classes radiate with the joy of creating something. I LOVE using Eileen Hull’s dies, and am thrilled to be part of her team, as well as her friend.

Favorite Project: Steampunk Shoes

Anne Redfern
I live in the UK and paper crafting is my passion, you can find me creating in my craft room most days! I love mixed media, working in 3D and creating journals and books, mainly using Eileen’s wonderful journal dies.

Favorite Project: Fabric Wrap Journal

We’re getting there…

Bona Rivera-Tran
Hi Everyone! My name is Bona Rivera-Tran and I love anything paper craft. I’m a mother to four amazing girls and a wife to a wonderful husband. I’m excited for this new adventure and look forward to sharing with you my projects.

Ginger Ropp
My name is Ginger Ropp and I love creating with paper. I love to make cards, 3D projects, folios and mini albums. I have been actively paper crafting for over 10 years.

Betsy Skagen
Hello! I am Betsy Skagen (which rhymes with toboggan). My careers as news reporter, writer, copy editor, graphic designer, small business owner and mom of special needs individuals helped me develop the skills I now use as artist and craft product designer. Art helps me balance the hectic lifestyle of my ADHD, unicycling and tightrope walking family. I live with my husband, son, daughter and two big dogs in the arctic circle of Minnesota. And while it is true that some of my family really does walk the high wire and ride unicycles, so far only the dogs have mastered counter-surfing. Please join me on my blog for artistic and craft inspiration.

Favorite Project: Mini Art Journal

Nicole Wright
I took my hobby where it’s all about playing with crayons and inky fingers … oh then I created a business. I educate through inspiration and technique with the goal of getting the mixed media artist in you to open up and explore your own creativity. I’m an Influencer for Amazon, DecoArt, Dynasty Brushes, Ranger Ink and I’m a Contributing Writer for Creative Scrapbooker Magazine. Are you ready to make a mess?… Trust the process.

Favorite Project: Trinket Box Snowman Ornament

Cork Fabric Journal Creations!

17 Jun

Yes, MORE cork fabric June Journal creations are here and the collaboration with Belagio continues! The team is really enjoying creating with the Belagio Cork Fabric. Durable and user friendly, the fabric can be easily die cut, sewn by machine, combined with fabric, paper or pretty much any substrate you can think of. Thin sheets of real cork are laminated to a fabric backing so it is very flexible and durable. It’s perfect for covering three dimensional projects like boxes, books, and home decor pieces. Additionally, you can also use it to create 3D flowers and other embellishments… Living up to the Belagio motto: You are only limited by your imagination – this fabric will expand your creative possibilities!

FIVE Journal Projects from the Inspiration Team…

We have a full plate of inspiration coming your way right now (scroll on down!) As always, there is a wide range of styles and projects to get your creative juices flowing. First let’s take a look at a beautiful Notebook Die project from Jenny Marples. Wow! She used new Sizzix Sculpting Foam for the purple flower and I love how the bloom just pops on the natural tones of cork fabric. Her blog post has all the details!

Tonya Trantham has also created a gorgeous Notebook Die project for us to enjoy. She added heavy gel through a stencil to add texture to the cover. You can still see the cork fabric through the gel however and it’s such a lovely effect! See more photos and details on her blog.

Do you ever lose things in the shuffle on your desk? Elizabeth Robinson had that problem with a little notebook she keeps for jotting ideas. She cleverly solved the issue by making a snazzy cover for it using the Pocket Notebook and Trinket Box Dies. I think you’ll agree that it’s a stand out! See her blog post for all the details.

Anna-Karin Evaldsson hasn’t been able to receive international mail because of the slow downs so she didn’t get her Cork Fabric samples in time. Being a very resourceful person however, she created a delightful Tiny Book with some sheets of regular cork from her stash. Check out the tutorial on her blog!

Lisa Hoel was inspired by the animal print cork fabric and some cute printed fabric in her stash to create this jungle themed Wrapped Journal. Eileen’s retired Lion & Monkey Die set also added the perfect decorative touch! Head on over to Lisa’s blog for the full tutorial and to see how she stitched up this soft cover.
