Sizzix Journal Mini

8 Aug

Create this Sizzix Journal Mini by trimming down the Sizzix Journal die to make an adorable little mini version! Great for small projects or gifts…

Enabler Alert

Have you gotten your Journal yet? I have some in my Etsy store so if you are in need 🙂

I did a Facebook Live about this project- you can view it here:

This book was so much fun I made two- the extra one I gave one to my friend’s daughter who was getting married. I tucked their wedding check inside an envelope attached in the book. Such a fun party they had!

I am gearing up for the Paper Trail 15. I need to figure out how many total miles I have driven on all Paper Trail trips but what notebook did I keep track of the mileage in? If only I had kept the info in a handy Traveler’s Notebook… 🙂

Thanks for visiting!  Eileen

Amy Powers’ Sizzix Journal Stitch Book

9 Jul

Today I’d like to share a beautiful surprise- Amy Powers’ Sizzix Journal Stitch Book! This girl is so talented! And I am so lucky she lives right down the road from me. We get together at our friend Pam Keravouri‘s beautiful studio (recently featured in Where Women Create!) once a month or so with other crafty friends and create.

Amy took the Journal die in a different direction and created a Stitch Book…

A Stitch Book is just like a sketch book only instead of pen and paper you use needle and thread to fill the pages! This book is a perfect place to sample new embroidery stitches, explore a design, or simply doodle with thread! A perfect take along, this project tucks nicely in your overnight bag. Just grab a needle and thread and let’s get stitching!

Materials:

1 Large Felt Piece, 9.5″ x 15″

6 to 9 Assorted Felt Pieces, cut to 8″ x 8″

Assorted Embroidery Floss

Round Elastic for binding

Optional: Frixion by Pilot Pen

Tools: (list 1 per line)

Iron

Scissors

Needle

Instructions:

  • Embroider a design for the cover. You can sew this design directly onto the felt piece for the cover or you can opt to sew it on another fabric which you then sew to the cover. The cover design should be 4″ x 9″ and will go on the right half of the fabric, ending 2.5″ from the right.
  • To create the cover, similar to a checkbook cover, fold over 2.5″ on each end of the 15″ long felt piece. Iron to crease the edge. Sew into place. I used a blanket stitch all the way around the book.
  • Thread the rounded elastic through parallel center holes of the mattboard cover to create 3 elastic bands. Knot to secure.
  • Insert the assembled book cover (mattboard) into the felt cover. You may need to bend the book spine backward to fit into sleeve.
  • To create the inserts for the book, fold each of the 8″ x 8″ felt pieces in half, using an iron to crease. Sandwich 3 of felt pieces. Sew along the inside seam of the inner most felt piece to bind these pages. Continue with the other groups of 3 felt pieces to create as many inserts as you’d like. The book will easily accomodate 3 inserts. You can make extras to have on hand to switch out as you fill the book with stitches!
  • To insert the pages, open to the center fold of each mini felt book and thread through the elastic band.
  • To embroider on the pages, you can keep the pages inserted in the book, or remove them, whichever is more comfortable for you. Keep a variety of needles and embroidery floss with the book so that you are ready to stitch whenever the urge hits. If you pre-thread your needles with assortment of flosses, it’ll be even easier to pick up and stitch in your new Stitch Book.
  • Tip: Draw the design you want to stitch onto the felt using a Frixion pen by Pilot. The ink in these pens disappears with heat which is handy for stitching since you can run a hot iron over the design you’ve stitched and poof! the design you drew for reference is gone!

About Amy

Like most middle children, Amy Powers learned early how to entertain herself marvelously. An active imagination decorated her world and occupied her mind. She grew up making art and telling wild stories. She still remembers precisely what it was like to be that little girl. More than a few decades later, Amy‘s still making stuff. Amy lives in the Washington, DC suburbs with her husband Rich and their adorable son Alfredo.

Double Embossing Technique

2 Jan

Hi everyone- welcome to 2017! Today I am sharing the Double Embossing Technique- a great way to add dimension to cards, tags and other projects.

We are excited to be introducing Make it Monthly, a new feature here! We show a technique and then you can share what YOU have been working on by posting in the linky at the end of the post.

Valentine’s Day is coming up so I decided to make a card for my husband.

eileen-hull-delight-5

There are three new techniques I played around with here:

  • Double Embossing- that’s embossing with heat
  • Embossing with pressure in an embossing folder
  • Using the Twist & Style tool to add a wire element to a card.

I really like the combination of the soft background and hard wire on top. The rich gold embossing and a twisted wire shape is guaranteed to melt your sweetie’s heart 🙂

ColorBox™ Blends and Sizzix dies are the perfect combination! The matboard base is the perfect blank surface and it’s so easy to add color and style. ColorBox™ Blends are craft inks so they stay wet longer- great for heat embossing and also for blending colors into each other.

You will need:

  • 661426  Sizzix Textured Impressions Embossing Folder- Eyelet Lace
  • 656492 Sizzix Matboard Pack, White
  • 660425 Sizzix Big Shot
  • 661113  Sizzix Twist & Style Tool
  • Clearsnap ColorBox™ Blends inks by Eileen Hull– Stop, Melon, Sunshine, Wildberry
  • A-2 card base, gold metallic
  • yarn
  • gold embossing powder
  • heat gun
  • adhesive-  SuperTape 1/2″
  • stapler
  • rubber sentiment stamp
  • soft wire- pink, gold
  • fun foam

Instructions

  1. Trim a piece of matboard to 4 1/8″ x 5 3/8″. Emboss matboard in Eyelet Lace folder.
  2. Apply Blends inks to surface of matboard, blending colors into each other so that the entire surface is covered.eileen-hull-delight-17
  3. Once color has been added, sprinkle gold embossing powder randomly over the matboard and heat. The embossing powder will stick to the areas that are wet, creating cool patches of gold. eileen-hull-delight-15
  4. Fold two 30″ lengths of gold and pink wire in half and twist using the Twist & Style tool (watch this video to see how it works). Repeat three times so you have three 15″ twisted wire strands.eileen-hull-delight-9
  5. Twist ends together and place on Twist & Style anchor. Braid the three strands together. Lay the piece flat on work surface with two ends pinched together at the bottom. eileen-hull-delight-12
  6. Find the middle of the wire braid and pinch into the center, creating a heart shape. Secure the two loose ends together by wrapping with a single piece of wire. eileen-hull-delight-11
  7. Stamp a sentiment on a torn piece of paper and ink around edges using the Wildberry Blends ink.eileen-hull-delight-1
  8. Position elements on card and staple wire heart in place. Adhere sentiment with double sided adhesive.
  9. Place matboard art on card base, using fun foam underneath for dimension.
  10. Add fiber bow!eileen-hull-delight-6

Now let’s see what you are up to creatively!  Add a pic of your latest card, tag or other creations to our linky here…
