Fairy Jar Tutorial by Doris Santore

24 Jun

It’s Friday and time to see the work of another Guest Designer- a Fairy Jar Tutorial by Doris Santore! I met Doris in class when I visited Life’s Memories & More in Massachusetts on one of my Paper Trail trips. I could see her work was extra special and asked if she would share a project with us… so, take it away Doris!

Doris-Santore-5
Doris-Santore-18

My name is Doris Santore (Aunt Doe) and I am really honored that Eileen Hull has asked me to be her Guest Designer this week. I have always loved making things for as long as I can remember, as a small child my grandmother taught me to crochet and sew, at six she bought me my first sewing machine. As the years have pasted I have found that my passion for crafting has expanded to other media’s besides yarn and material. These days you will find me surrounded with papers, inks, paints and glue. Honestly I just love making things. You can see more of my work on my blog Berry Best Designs.

The project I have decided to share with you is my version of a Captured Fairy Jar…. the designer of the original jar is Nichola Battilana. Here’s the link to her Fairy Jar which may be seen at Pixie Hill!

Getting Started:

Supplies:
Glue Rangers Inkssentials Glue n’ Seal (for applying tissue and glitter to the jar)
Beacons 3-IN-1 (for glueing flowers to jar)
Twinklets Diamond Dust
Sizzix Dies by Eileen Hull
Flower – Romance
Flower – Heart & Soul
Leaves – Spring
Die Cutting Machine
Tissue Paper
Battery operated Tea Light
Quart Jar
Foam Brush or 1” soft paint brush
Note: you can also use watered down Elmer’s Glue or any brand you have as long as it dries clear.
Black Paint any brand

With any brand of black paint, paint your fairies and set aside to dry. The Fairies I am using are from Gypsy Soul Laser Cuts  http://gslcuts.com .  They come in small, medium and large and are precision cut from .030 chip board. I used the large size Fairies. Note: They can be cut from black cardstock or vinyl if you have the machine and a SVG file.

Doris-Santore-3

It’s time to make some flowers….

Measure the height and circumference of the jar you are using.

Doris-Santore-7

Fold Tissue Paper and cut to size … my jar measured 6” x 13” you will want to add approximately ¼” overlap in the back. Note:  It is easier to work with the tissue paper cut to approximate size of the jar.

Once you have your tissue paper cut you can then take your glue and start applying it to the jar one section at a time.  Carefully line the paper up with the top and bottom of the jar and lightly press it to the jar being careful not to rip the tissue paper. Continue this step around the jar.  Apply the glue to under and top sides of the overlap on the back side of jar.  Gently hug the top of the jar to make sure all tissue paper is glued down and also do this on the bottom.  Add more glue if needed. Turn jar upside down and set aside to dry.    Note: the tissue paper will rip easily so be gentle when doing this step of the project.

Doris-Santore-9

Once the glue is dry you can apply a light coat of glue then sprinkle with glitter where you would like it to sparkle.  I added a light coat all over the jar so it has lots of sparkle.

Doris-Santore-12

It’s time to make some flowers….

Sizzix Dies / Eileen Hull’s Flower Collection

Doris-Santore-18

       Flower – Romance

       Flower – Heart & Soul

       Leaves –  Spring

I used light and dark pink tissue paper to make the big pink flower. Coffee Filter was used to make the white flower, pink button for center and pipe cleaner for the stem which I left long and curled. Card Stock and pink tissue paper was used for the center pink flower with a gem brad holding it together. The last two flowers are made from decorative cupcake liners and tissue paper. I layered them to get the look I wanted and used a gem brad to hold them together.

Doris-Santore-15

Now it’s time to decorate the jar. I used Eileen Hull’s Dies by Sizzix the newest dies from her Flower Collection. I made several flowers using coffee filters, tissue paper, cardstock and even paper cupcake holders, I mixed all these different papers together and layered them until I got the look I was after. For more information and directions on making Eileen’s beautiful flowers please go to Eileen Hull Paper Flower Tutorials. She explains how to go about making these flowers and all the different materials you can use to make your own beautiful flowers in her SIZZIX PAPER FLOWER ONLINE PARTY.

Once your jar is dry and your flowers are made, it’s time to start embellishing. Choose the fairy or fairies you want to capture, place a few drops of glue on the painted side of the fairy and place in jar and hold against the glass so it adheres. You can add moss to the bottom of the jar at this point and then add your light source.  I glued some twine around the neck of the jar to hide the top of the tissue paper, glue flowers to the outside of your jar along with some leaves. I also added Washi Tape to the cover of the jar.  I decided to add a third Fairy on the lid and glued both her and a flower to the lid.  The amount of embellishments you used is up to you.

Appreciation Flower Pocket by Anita Scroggins

3 Jun

Lucky us-! Today we will see how to make an Appreciation Flower Pocket by Anita Scroggins, our featured Guest Designer. Anita shares this cool project that she made for her Girl Scout Camp volunteers using the new Paper Flower Party Sizzix dies.

I met Anita at the Crafty Scrapper on my first Paper Trail trip passing through Texas. We had so much fun in class that we stayed in touch. Creative friends are such a blessing!

Now, here’s Anita’s cool project- to see more of her work, visit her blog…

Hi everyone, I’m Anita from The Flamingo Chronicals and I’m super happy to be featured here on Eileen’s blog today.  I am a scrapbooker who also does mixed media and other crafts. I also teach and do design work for several manufacturers. It’s rough, but someone has to do it!

My style is lots of flowers and bling, and no white space. Less is less and more is best is my motto. I have two grown up daughters and a very cute granddaughter to keep my busy these days. I live just outside Dallas, TX with my Irish Wolfhound and my hubby of almost 30 years.

Photo 1 Sizzix Flower Pocket

I am the Director for Girl Scout Camp every summer so I am always in need of Thank You gifts.  Today I have combined the Flower Pocket Die and the Candy Cup die to come up with a quick way to show appreciation.  I love how easy the Flower Pocket Die is to use and how quick it goes together. Two pieces and three strip of tape – and you are done!

Photo 2 Sizzix Flower Pocket

For the front of the Flower Pockets I wanted a tiny little flowers over flowing with flowers. How cute are these?   I used the Candy cup die, some LittleB chipboard, paper, and an adhesive sheet from Thermoweb.

Photo 3 Sizzix Flower Pocket

After die cutting I cut the sections apart, inked them, shaped them a bit, then adhered using Super Tape down the sides and a Foam Square in the middle.  I used a hot glue gun to adhere a variety of wired and flat flowers in place.

To see more of Anita’s work please visit her blog.  You can also keep up with her on Instagram, Pinterest, and Facebook to see her latest projects and classes.

Want to make this project? You can find the supplies here:

  • Sizzix ScoreBoards Die – Candy Cup
  • ThermOWeb iCraft 1/4″ double sided adhesive

Thanks for stopping by and many thanks to Anita for sharing her ideas with us!

How to Make a Gift Card Box with Marjie Kemper

13 May

It’s Friday- and today we will see how to make a gift card box with Marjie Kemper! So happy to welcome my friend and fellow New Yorker to the blog. Marjie is so talented and such a fun person to be with. Please make sure to visit Marjie’s blog where she shares her experience and photos demoing in the Scotty booth at the Craft & Hobby Association Show in January!

Hi, I’m Marjie Kemper and it’s a pleasure to be featured here on Eileen’s blog.  I’m a mixed media artist who started out as a scrapbooker many years ago. I teach mixed media art classes nationwide and online with Craftsy.

I am a huge fan of blending and layering color and I work a lot with Ranger’s Distress Inks.  I live in New York with my husband and two sons. Please sign up for my newsletter to get monthly updates.

Gift Card Holder

Today I’ve paired Eileen’s Recipe Box die with Tim Holtz’s Detailed Butterflies die to create a custom gift card holder.  These are so easy to make and wonderful to have on hand at the end of the school year for teacher gifts.

Eileen’s Recipe Box die is a favorite of mine because it’s so versatile. It’s a great one for party favors, business card holders, and holiday treats for all the kids in class.  I can see cutting lots of them and using them to hold clues for a treasure hunt. It can even hold a mini-album, if you’re a scrapbooker.

I cut sturdy Mat Board with Eileen’s Recipe Box die and colored an old book page with Distress Inks. I choose Mat Board for all my box projects because it is so durable and really holds up over time.  Next I cut Tim’s Detailed Butterflies die a few times with both black cardstock and old book paper.

I attached the layers with matte medium and used a brad and spinner to make a cute body for the butterfly.  A bit more metal finishes it off and I used a piece of Velcro as a fastener to open/close the box. Some strong red-line tape holds the box edges together.

Barbara Rankin’s Sizzix Needle Book

25 Mar

I am happy to welcome another special Guest Designer to the blog- and just wait until you see Barbara Rankin’s Sizzix Needle Book tutorial! It is over the top awesome and every little detail is just perfect! You will want to check out her blog, Black Hole Art Studio, and see lots of other cool projects she has created…

On my way back from California on Paper Trail CHA, I was lucky enough to pass through Memphis and meet up with Barbara Rankin and Inspiration Team Member Pam Bray. I can’t tell you how nice it is, after many long hours of driving and being by myself, to meet up with friends that I don’t normally get to spend time with. That visit did so much to brighten my day- thanks, friends!

Barbara-Rankin's-Sizzix-Needle-Book-12

We had lunch at Jim ‘N Nick’s for some real Memphis B-B-Q and then a quick trip to the local Michael’s.

Here we are with mascot Scotty…

Barbara-Rankin's-Sizzix-Needle-Book-14

So now let’s see what Barbara has made for us!

Barbara-Rankin's-Sizzix-Needle-Book-

I have been crafting most of my life, and I have tried just about everything I could get my hands on.  I began rubber stamping and card making in 1995, expanding my craft into making books and altering them.  More recently, I followed the trend and became involved in the world of mixed media. I love dimension in everything I create, and Sizzix dies are one of the fabulous tools that allow me to do that.

I met Eileen Hull at CHA a few years ago.  She was so friendly and personable, and I was so happy to meet her.  Later on, she asked me to make a few projects for her for CHA, and now, I am here sharing a project as her guest designer.  I am so blessed to have met her and to have these opportunities.

My style is varied, but mostly encompass the vintage, antique, shabby chic, and Steampunk style.  I get inspiration from lots of places, like YouTube and Pinterest, but I love to read books that allow me to develop new and wonderful techniques which I can then share with you.  Without a store to teach classes any longer, I had to figure another way to accomplish this.  Therefore, I decided to learn how to make video tutorials and share them on YouTube.  I have my own channel and I hope you will visit me sometime.

Currently, I call Memphis, Tennessee, my home, where I live with my wonderful, supportive husband of 34 years, and my two Yorkshire Terriers.

Now, for my project, I knew I was going to use one of Eileen’s newest dies, the Needle Book.

I used white leather paper to cut out the two pieces, as well as paper from the Prima Tales of You and Me paper collection.

Barbara-Rankin's-Sizzix-Needle-Book

Cover both sides of the needle book with the papers.

Barbara-Rankin's-Sizzix-Needle-Book

Barbara-Rankin's-Sizzix-Needle-Book

I used two of the die shapes from the labels die that would fit over images on the printed paper and cut them out.  The die cut on the left was used on the front of the book, and the one on the right was used to make a pocket inside the book.  I inked the edges of both with a matching chalk ink.

Barbara-Rankin's-Sizzix-Needle-Book-

I used a third die to cut a piece of glossy gold card stock to place beneath the image on the front of the book, and the image was lifted with foam dots.

Gold metal embellishments were added to the front with tiny pearl stickers.  A tiny piece of Velcro adhesive was used to keep the book closed.

I cut several pieces of text weight ivory paper to 4” x 3-12” wide, folded in the center.  I wrapped ivory crochet thread around the pages and the book spine to hold the pages.  I can add or remove pages because I did not sew them in.

A small ivory tassel was added to the spine with a decorative metal embellishment to cover the works.

Here are a few pictures of this pretty little book from different angles.  I plan to use this particular one as a little note book to carry in my purse.

Kim Evans of Emerald Creek

26 Feb
I am very happy to introduce our talented Guest Designer for today, Kim Evans of Emerald Creek!  We met at CHA through Inspiration Team member Nicole Wright. Kim is a designer and business owner, running Emerald Creek, an on-line craft supply store in Canada.
Here are two projects that Kim has designed for us today with an Alice in Wonderland theme. She has used the Sizzix Passport Book and Needle Book to tell the story…
Kim-evans-of-Emerald-Creek
Down the Rabbit Hole to Wonderland

Here’s more about Kim in her own words…

Kim-Evans-of-Emerald-Creek1

My Husband & My Kids are my Joy! I love family activities, especially camping. My husband and I are high school sweethearts and have been together over 20 years. We celebrated our 15th wedding anniversary last fall and we have been blessed with 2 beautiful children, Isaac (4) and Vienna (2).

In 2012, I had the opportunity to begin the move from home building to rubber stamps, thanks to an offer from my Uncle Gerry Beazely of GCS Artstamps. How could I resist. I grew up stamping and have watched the industry change.

Being an Entrepreneur type I have been using my creative mind, combined with my business sense to expand into a few new lines. I am excited and ready for the challenge of this new career. I am passionate, ambitious and disciplined, so I am excited to use all of these skills while working at my hobby. How cool is that?!

If you want me to describe my style in a word it “Random”, I love everything so you may be hard pressed to say, oh that a Kim (Emerald Creek) project. I can appreciate so much, even if its not my particular taste, i love seeing how others think and work and love to challenge myself to try everything once.

This latest journey can only be described as Wonderland.

…..’it all started with a random email from Eileen, asking me if I wanted to do a guest post.

“What?! Are you meaning for me to get this, or were you hoping to cross-promote with my design team? Or do you want me to donate products?”
“Actually I think people would be interested to see something from you personally if you are up for it. You are coming at things from a different perspective than most of the designers that will be highlighted so I think people will be interested…”
“YES! Of Course!” and then I started thinking about her dies. I love books, so naturally the passport book was a must, but then, I had the needle book die I was dying to use, which brought me to the big and small of Alice in Wonderland…. read more at the Emerald Creek Dare Blog to finish the story and see all of the charms, stamps, techniques, inks and mediums used to bring the story of my Wonderland Story to life.
