Ruffled Flowers

25 Apr

Some of you on Facebook may have seen my photo of the trim I found at the thrift store for two dollars a roll. That’s right. Don’t hate me…

I asked you all what I should do with it and there were lots of suggestions- most people said pillows (this still might happen- I have tons left!). I wound up making ruffled flowers wrapped on a pencil.

When we go to visit my husband’s stepdad at assisted living, they have a cute little vase with pens that have flowers on top (so you don’t forget and take one) at the sign-in desk. I keep thinking it would be fun to do some for my desk. I like to use pencils because you might change your mind!

SNAP! Blogging Conference

16 Apr

Wish me luck! I am headed off to SNAP! tomorrow… working on some takeaways to hand out… nothing like the last minute!

“SNAP! is a a community where imaginative bloggers come together; learn from one another and walk away invigorated.”

My goal is to meet fellow bloggers and learn how to grow my blog. There are some great speakers discussing a wide range of topics, so I have been highlighting interesting ones on my schedule.

I first met Tauni Everett, SNAP! founder, at The Creative Connection. We were in a class together taught by the fabulous Cathe Holden and Tauni (a self-proclaimed non-crafter) dumped mica powder all over herself (the red star on her head is a reward for such a good project). Things like that bond you to people 🙂 It is with great excitement and anticipation that I head off to Salt Lake City!

Lowe’s is the main sponsor of the conference and I found out yesterday that my name was picked to compete in a Lowe’s challenge on Saturday. It kind of sounds like a Project Runway/Craft Wars type of deal. Go Team 4! Not sure what will be required of us but if nothing else, I’m sure we’ll have a good time.

I am rooming with Jen Goode– an amazing artist, web guru and great friend. Can’t wait to see her and catch up. I will also be helping my friend Sharon of Crafts ‘n Coffee fame in the FloraCraft booth with Make and Takes.

Talk to you when I get back!

Cousin Slide Bracelet

8 Apr

I am not a professional jewelry maker, by any means, but when I was offered the opportunity to work with Cousin’s new Slider Bracelet program, I had to give it a try. After watching their step-by-step video, I felt confident that I could make one.

Cousin is a premier wholesaler of jewelry making supplies and has been family owned for over 40 years.
The Slider Bracelet system is now available in JoAnn Fabrics. I recommend if you want a quick, easy and fun project, head over and pick up supplies to make a few. This project would be a great gift for Mother’s Day!
After laying out the bracelet exactly as the video described, I decided to add a faux leather 3D flower made with a couple of my Sizzix dies to the bracelet to make it a little more personal. The flower and leaves were attached to the slide with fishing line and some glue. I love the contrast of the turquoise flower and the red bracelet. I will have to make another one for Mom 🙂
Make sure to click on the blue button on my sidebar to follow along with the Designer Crafts Connection. You will see lots of inspirational versions of this project created by the amazing designers in this group.
Thanks to Liz Heggy and Cousin for giving me the chance to work with your cool new product!

Heart Sentiment Box

5 Apr

I happened to meet Amy Powers when I saw her amazing ezine mentioned by someone on line. I bought it and was immediately charmed by the beautiful projects, layout and photos. Here’s her Spring issue…

I got up my nerve and wrote to her asking if she would consider a submission from me for her next issue. It turns out she lives just about 20 minutes down the road from me! So we have been able to meet for dinner and get to know each other- this is one of the blessings of the internet- the fun friends you make. I love Amy’s whimsical and bright style and she is such a genuine and warm person… And to top it all off, I was honored to have a project selected and published in the Birthday issue!

So Amy was always mentioning her friend Pam Keravuori in conversation. Pam is an incredible artist specializing in lettering. Amy introduced us and the next thing you know, we are teaming up to teach classes together at Angela’s Happy Stamper in Reston, VA, close to where we both live! It just makes sense- I make boxes that need embellishing and Pam needs a surface for her beautiful lettering- plus it’s always more fun when you collaborate…

Next weekend on Saturday, April 13 from 1:00-3:30 PM, we’ll be teaching how to make the Heart Box and Flower with Heart Petals

dies I designed for Sizzix! You will go home with two versions of the box. This would be a great Mother’s Day Gift, don’t you think? With some chocolates inside? Or a special piece of jewelry… maybe even a little mini-album with photos of the two of you! Sign up here!

Paper Flower Roundup

1 Apr

Happy Spring everyone! Flowers are the theme for our Designer Craft Connection hop this month. Make sure to hop around and see all of the amazing projects created by the talented designers in this group. Just click on the blue button in my sidebar and follow the webring.

I made an Easter bonnet for the Sizzix UK blog on Saturday using my Sizzix 3D flower dies. For instructions on how to assemble the hat, look here. Here’s a video tutorial on making Coffee Filter Flowers used in the hat.

My son and six year old granddaughter were here for Easter and Trinity just loved this hat and asked if she could wear it to church. I said sure but had not glued in all of the flowers and told her she had to be careful with it so the flowers didn’t fall out. She hardly moved the whole time so I am saving it for the next time she comes to visit 🙂
Thanks for stopping by- hope you had a great weekend!

Coffee Filter Flowers

28 Mar

We are back after a week long cruise with our family! Since my son was in Afghanistan for Christmas we decided to celebrate his homecoming with a trip. What a fun time- I am so lucky to have them all.

All of the beautiful tropical flowers on the trip inspired me to make some of my own for a project on the Sizzix blog today. Go there for written instructions on how to make these pretty 3D colored flowers.

After posting about how to make flowers from my husband’s shirt, I had requests for a video. So here it is… and it only took me 5 hours this time to make a four minute video! Please tell me at some point it will get easier… sheesh.

Happy St. Patrick’s Day!

17 Mar

St. Patrick’s Day is a fun holiday and one that I celebrated as a kid. My friend Irene’s mother would bring three of us down to the big parade in NYC. One year we got to help carry the largest Irish flag in the parade. We thought she was the coolest mom ever because when we were 16 she took us to a pub! Don’t tell my mother…

I used Viva Decor’s 3D Stamp Paint to ink the shamrocks (which were die cut from this Sizzix flower). Last week I attended a class taught by Cheryl Boglioli– she used the Viva products in really cool ways so they were on my mind.

For a look at full instructions, head over to the Sizzix UK blog.

Button Pencil Can

9 Mar

You have arrived at one of the stops on the Buttons Galore & More Blog Hop!
Soup cans are so useful- and they can be dressed up quickly and inexpensively with a little imagination. I cleaned the can well and started wrapping yellow twine around the can. I used Zip-Dry Paper Glue here and there to make sure the twine stayed in place.

A piece of lace was wrapped around the top of the can and buttons were glued on top.

I added a 3D flower made from my Sizzix Flower, Layers #9 die. The flower was die-cut from coffee filters and colored with watered down paint just along the edges. I added Leaves die-cut from felt and a utility fabric.

Visit all of the designers’ blogs and see lots of other inspiring spring and wedding project ideas. Just click on the blue button on the sidebar to hop around to see all the blogs.

To win one of the Viewtainers filled with ribbons and buttons, leave a comment on the Buttons Galore & More blog.  The comment should contain your favorite project from the hop, and the container you would like to win.  Comments need to be made by March 17th, 2013 at 11:59 eastern standard time.

Vinyl Gift Card Folder

4 Mar

Just wanted to share a new technique I just discovered. I saw this vinyl remnant for a couple of dollars at JoAnn’s and had to get it because of the beautiful turquoise color. It sat on the pile for a couple of months waiting for the right idea to strike.

Here’s a folder I made using the Sizzix ScoreBoards Gift Card Folder die, paper, vinyl and my sewing machine. If you want to know how, check out the Sizzix UK blog here.

This was so quick and easy to put together. The folders are great for gift cards, business cards, credit cards, or use it to tuck a spare key in your purse- lots of possibilities!

Today is our first Monday Designer Connection Hop. Click on the blue button in the sidebar to visit all of the amazing designers on the hop.

There’s a giveaway too on Julie McGuffee’s blog, Life in the Craft Lane. To be entered to win, hop through the DCC blogs and leave a comment on the blogs featuring your favorite technique, or a technique you can’t wait to try, then let Julie know which ones they are by commenting on her blog.

Thanks for visiting!

I am happy to say that Debbie K. is the lucky winner of the Square Box giveaway! Debbie, please email me (EileenHull@aol.com) with your address- congrats!

 Blogger Debbie K. said…

I love this box die and would use it often. First I’d use it to make party favors for my cousin’s bridal shower. Then I’d make a keepsake graduation book for my nephew. Then I’d make them to present tiny Christmas ornaments I han make. The ideas for this sweet box are endless!
Congrats Debbie!
